Phenix City is located on Chattahoochee River next to Columbus, Ga. In the 1940's and 1950's Phenix City was know as "Sin City" because of all the gambling, prostituition and organized crime activities taking place. The soliders who were stationed at Ft. Benning Georgia were banned from going to the gambling joints during that time. Margaret Ann Barnes wrote the book The Tragedy and the Triumph of Phenix City, Alabama and a movie was later made called the Phenix City Story.
