1800s western america
late afternoon just before sunset
located on his ranch
satisfied/content
reins
face looks rugged like the leather of the reins
go out on the ranch to look for predators
"stupid horse, got to get him shod"
It was the mid 1800s in the west. The sun was beginning to set over the landscape as the lone rider sat on his horse. He was surveying his ranch and thinking of how he had to go out and check the range. Coyotes and other predators were killing his livestock. Other than this, he was very content that he and his family were on their own place and well provisioned. As the sun shown in his eyes, he raised his hand to shade them. His face looked rugged, similar to the leather of the reins in his hand. As he spun the horse to leave, it stepped in a cow patty and slipped. "Stupid horse, got to get him shod": he lamented. He and the horse continued walking until they hit the look out. From that point, he could see everything he owned - his land, his animals, his family. He had a good life that he was thankful for. But then he saw one cow venturing away from the herd. He called his border collie over to round up the herd.
